List of 12 Different Types of Cardboard Boxes
1 – Paperboard
Paperboard is a thin type of cardboard which is used for everything. Even for packaging of cereal boxes or toilet rolls. The other name of paperboard is chipboard, also known as carton.
It is less solid than corrugated fibreboard, so is preferred for lighter objects packaging or non-load-bearing purpose.
2 – Single-Face Board
This is actually corrugated cardboard with no second straight piece on the other side of the flute layer. This type of packaging is mostly used to separate items inside the box, to keep them safe from break and hit together during transit. There are variety of designs and styles of custom cardboard boxes available in the market.
3 – Triple-Wall Board
Like its name, that triple-wall board has 3 layers of fluting in between the two outside walls. This is a special type of corrugated cardboard packaging used for exceptionally heavy items like automotive parts or electric home appliances.
There are even cardboards with four or five layers or more than that fluting between the two outside walls. But they are not very common, they use in rare cases.
4 – Double-Wall Board
The double-wall board adds an extra layer of fluting between two outside layers. This makes the board stronger and gives extra protection to the items packed inside.
5 – Single-Wall board
This is a typical corrugated cardboard, which is available in common types of cardboard packaging. It contains one layer of fluting between two flat walls. This is the cardboard that is generally used in boxes. Single-wall board does not means it is weak, it is quite strong, even with one flute layer.
6 – Corrugated fibreboard
Corrugated fibreboard is a three-layered material which is made up of a flat outside on each side, with a curly layer in the middle called fluting. This curly middle layer acts to make the material stronger to grip heavy objects without folding or bending.
Corrugated fibreboard has a variety of thicknesses to act for more strong or less strong cardboard, but it depends on the packaging requirements.
The sizes of corrugated fibreboard are generally specified in letters which is based on the width and frequency of the waves in the flute layer in the middle.
For example, Flute A is 5mm, B is 3mm and C is 4mm.
7 – Honeycomb cardboard
This is not used very common, but is considered due to its strength level. This cardboard has many levels of corrugation that make up the length of the piece.
A layered paper covered all the layers on each side to make up the width of the board. It can be used in place of pallets and some other industrial needs.
8 – Conservation Board
This is a type of matboard which is very usefull and effective for conservation framing. By the use of this board our memorable photo cards became protected for a long time.
9 – Grey Paperboard
Partially Grey paperboard is made up with recycled paper materials. The reason of its grey color is that it is made up of recycled material and not usually bleached.
10 – Grey Cardboard
Like grey paperboard, it is also made up with recycled paper materials. Including packaging, it is also used in many industries like book binding, model making etc. It is a little thicker than paperboard.
11 – Mat Board
You have seen picture frames in every homes. These frames are made up of mat board. It keeps our lovely photos safe and gives them a beautiful look.
There are numerous other types of mat board like standard, white, core, black core and colour core mat board.
12 – Standard Mat board
This is not much better mat board for conservation. It will slow the deterioration of the pictures or art it is protecting, but will not protect it completely.
